The #1 Lie That’s Holding You Back

by |
Blog Business Model

I hate lies.

Especially ones that negatively impact you.

And there’s one helluva LIE that the profession has been drumming for centuries.

It’s one of the main reasons CPAs suffer in silence. Thinking everything is normal.  Not achieving the success they deserve.

So I’m going to tell you what it is.

Because once you know the lie…

you can do something about it.

“The timesheet is the most important thing.”
That’s exactly what the instructor told us at the Certified Management Consultant course that I was doing in 2002.
I tried to tell him about client value, but he kept saying the consultant’s stock in trade was his time.
After this course, I still needed to do an ethics course and the ethics exam to get my CMC accreditation, but after this comment, I thought something was ethically wrong with selling time chunks, so I decided not to do it. I thought I would be better off as an ethical non-CMC than a CMC peddling time chunks.
As you’ve said, Erik, timesheets really hold people back and prevent them from being real professionals.
    Thanks for the reminder.

You hit the nail on the head Tom. It’s definitely NOT ethical to peddle the billable hour. And I’m thoroughly impressed that you stood “your ethical ground” and walked away from the certification. That’s AWESOME!!!
