When Are You Happy?
Accountants, When Are You Happy?
This week’s blog post is coming to you from the booming metropolis of Edmonton. The reason why I’m in Edmonton is I’ve actually come to watch the Oilers play. While I’ve been here, I’ve noticed a lot of people that haven’t seemed happy and it’s made me think… accountants, when are you happy?
In A Rush
I’ve had this happen a couple of times to me today when I was talking to someone and they were in such a rush to be at the destination and weren’t enjoying their journey. . It seemed like they were thinking, I need to be better, I need to be better… specifically their accounting firm. They were looking at the size of their firm, and the revenue they were making and they weren’t feeling good about where they were at.
Then a second thing happened. I was at the bank to fix the PIN on my credit card because it wasn’t working. There were only three bank associates working and customers were getting pissed off. They all seemed agitated and I got the impression they were thinking wow hurry up hurry. I’ve got stuff to do… hurry, hurry, hurry!
What’s The Rush?
What is everybody in such a big hurry for? Why are we rushing? Why are we in such a big rush?
When we’re looking at your accounting practice and we’re looking at improving your life, yet we want to make better money. We want to work with the right clients. We want to have free time. Those are all great things to strive for and you can get there – I have a program that you might have heard of – Accountant Success Formula.
The Vicious Cycle
What about simply being happy with where you are right now? If you’re constantly looking off into the future thinking I’ll be happy when I’m over there, you’re in trouble. People think that when XYZ happens, then I’ll be happy. When I make X amount of money, then I’ll be happy. When I have these types of clients, then I’ll be happy.
News flash for you! You’ll never be happy. Once you get to that future destination out there in the future, you’re simply going to chase the next future goal.
So it becomes a vicious cycle that you end up not being happy regardless of how much success you’ve had. I’ve seen this happen with many super successful people too. They’re not happy because they’re constantly aggravated that they’re not in the future. They are right where they are NOW.
Happiness In The Now
The reality is, you’re always here, right now. There’s a delicate balance between being happy and being content with who and where you are today. It’s also important to celebrate where you came from.
I love a bigger, better, brighter future. I love giving you more money, better clients, and more free time. That’s what the Accountant Success Formula is all about. But if you’re constantly thinking that I’ll be happy when I achieve my goals, you’ll never be happy.
You want to have a happy life. You want to be present with your family and kids. You want to enjoy the work that you’re doing in the present moment; in the now.
Take A Moment
So if you’re catching yourself feeling frustrated and discontent because you’re not happy where you’re at right now, take a moment to just sit still. Ask yourself what’s wrong right now, just right at this moment. And if you do that, and you really think about it, there’s nothing ever wrong in the present moment. There’s only something wrong in your mind. Your mind is always telling you there’s something you should be doing and that you should be somewhere else.
Again, the future’s great but don’t pin your hopes and your happiness on the future. You need to be happy in the NOW.
